Child, Youth and Adult Presentations 


The Wyandotte County Chapter of the American Red Cross is committed to providing the community free information on the resources that are available through our organization. Below is a listing of some of the presentations that are currently available:


Disaster Preparedness:

Disaster Preparedness for Seniors:
Are you in good health, but not quite as agile as you use to be? Do you have hearing or vision problems? Do you use a cane or walker? Learn how to plan, prepare for, respond to, and recover from a disaster. This program will discuss family disaster plans, fire safety, grandchildren safety, and general disaster supplies.

Together We Prepare - Workplace:
Heightened awareness and safety concerns among employers and employees about terrorism, changing Homeland Security alert status, natural disasters and events in the daily news provide an environment that makes First Aid and Preparedness both valuable and timely. This "non-certified" presentation is short, interactive and enjoyable which provides basic first aid and preparedness information.

Together We Prepare – Schools:
The Together We Prepare - Schools program is intended to mobilize communities to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters where they live, work, plan and learn through targeted outreach to various populations including students, teachers and administrators.

Masters of Disaster – School Age:
The American Red Cross Masters of Disaster® curriculum helps teachers integrate important disaster safety information into their regular lesson plans for core subjects, such as language arts, math, science, and social studies. The Masters of Disaster curriculum supplements the lessons teachers are already teaching and at the same time provides students with information to help them prepare for disasters and stay safe during and after a disaster.

**Additional Disaster Education Program Presentations are available for both adults and youth groups on Tornado Safety, Thunderstorm and Lightening Safety, Floods and Flash Flood Safety, Earthquake Safety, Heat Safety and Winter Storm Safety.



Health & Safety:

AED’s (Automated External Defibrillator) in the Workplace:
Find out: What is an AED? How does it work? Who needs one? Is it easy to use? How much do they cost? How do I get one?

Workplace Training Programs:
This training can be customized to meet your specific needs. Training is available on a variety of topics: Workplace Violence Awareness; Ergonomics; Your Heart Matters; Stress Management; Back Injury Prevention.

HIV/AIDS Education:
This interactive seminar provides the basic knowledge about HIV/AIDS and how to separate facts from misinformation and opinions. Participants will be able to distinguish HIV from AIDS; understand how HIV infection progresses; understand how HIV is and is not spread; and understand how to prevent the spread of HIV.

Till Help Arrives:
This 1 to 1 ½ hr. presentation covers what to do in an emergency situation, when someone is choking, burned, bleeding, experiences breathing problems, or has a sudden illness. The course is designed for youths and adults in neighborhood groups and schools. Participants are trained in on-the-spot responses and how to reach emergency personnel. This class is intended to give you the basic information you need to respond to an emergency. Ages 8 & up.


Youth Presentations:

Scrubby Bear:
This program teaches children the importance of hand washing, the single most important step in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. This 1-hr presentation at schools and day care centers uses a video, as well as an activity using a substance called, Glogerm, which shows children how well they washed their hands.

Be a Gun Proof Kid:
This 1-hr. interactive session teaches youth basic rules of gun safety, such as “Don’t Touch.” An activity sheet on gun safety rules is provided. Parents also receive written information with tips on how to prevent gun injuries to children at home. Message is written in English/Spanish. Youth ages 5-15.

Longfellow’s Whale Tales:
This program targets children ages 3-10. This 1-hr. presentation is a land based water safety program that teaches children to swim with a buddy, follow the rules, to look before they leap, and other safety tips. Posters, a video and interactive discussion are used in these sessions.

Bicycle Safety:
This 1-hr. presentation teaches children the importance of and proper way to wear a helmet. Learn rules of the road that apply to both cars and bicycles along with proper hand signals for turning and stopping. Discuss Importance of Scooter Safety and tips for a safe ride. Use of video and hand-outs are used in this program. Youth ages 5-12.

Home Alone:
In this 1-hr. interactive class, youth ages 8-12, learn what to do when they are home alone in an emergency, when the telephone rings, or when someone knocks at the door.

Till Help Arrives:

Disaster Dudes:
This 1-hr. class teaches older youth, ages 10-14, what to do in cases of a fire or storm, using a video and discussion. Participants will learn what goes in an actual disaster supply kit and how to create a home emergency plan.

Fire Safety:
Learn about the importance of fire prevention, escape routes, fire drills in the home, calling 9-1-1 and not going back into a burning building. This 1-hr. presentation is designed for ages 5-8 Students receive safety brochures that can be shared with the entire family.

Babysitting:
Designed for youth ages 11-15, this 8-hr. course includes essential care giving skills. Skills such as appropriate disciplining techniques, identifying safety hazards, caring for an infant, first aid for choking, dealing with emergencies, and proper hand washing are some of the topics practiced in class. Workbooks are also provided. There is a fee for this class.
